Well, this announcement might complicate the research required for my roundup of the best Wi-Fi range extenders. Amazon's router brand, eero, has announced that certain Amazon Echo speakers will now work as range extenders.

By adding in an Echo speaker to your network, you can get speeds of up to 100 Mbps for 10 or fewer connected devices in the 5 GHz band, without needing additional hardware.

To make it work, you just need to have a current eero mesh Wi-Fi system and a compatible Echo speaker. By linking your Amazon account in the eero app, the eero Built-in feature will enable on the Echo speakers when they are needed.

If you have a strong Wi-Fi signal, the eero app will intelligently opt to not use the Echo as an extender to avoid cluttering your home with too may wireless signals.

What devices work with eero Built in?

To use the new feature, you'll need a compatible eero router:

  • eero 6
  • eero Pro 6
  • eero Pro 6E
  • eero 6+
  • eero Max 7
  • eero Plus

Then to activate the feature, you will need one of the following Echo speakers:

  • Echo Dot (5th Gen) with clock
  • Echo Dot (5th Gen)
  • Echo (4th Gen)
  • Echo Dot (4th Gen) with Clock
  • Echo Dot (4th Gen)
  • Echo Pop

If you want to give it a go, eero has a bunch of detailed step by step instructions to set up the feature on its support pages.
