There are a huge number of reasons to sign up to Amazon Prime. The biggest advantage is free one-day shipping on eligible orders (in some capital cities around Australia), but there are also features like Prime Video video streaming, Prime Music and massive sale events like Amazon Prime Day.

Given Amazon's Prime service costs $9.99 per month, it makes sense to give it a go before you enter in your credit card digits. Here's how you can take advantage of Amazon's 30-day trial period.

Signing up to the Prime free trial: Step by step

Step 1:

Head to amazon.com.au/prime on your computer or phone's browser.

When prompted, sign in to your Amazon account. If you don't have an Amazon account, you can choose to create one at this step.

Step 4:

Enter in your payment details. You can choose to use Amazon gift cards, a credit or debit card, or Zip Pay.

Don't worry, you won't get charged until the trial is up after 30 days. You can cancel before that time for free if you don't find the service valuable.

How to cancel your Amazon Prime subscription

If you find that you aren't getting your money's worth from Amazon Prime during the trial period, don't forget to cancel. It's easy to do following these steps:

  1. Login to your Prime Membership account and select the "Manage my Membership" option in the navigation menu.
  2. On the right hand side of the top bar, Choose "Manage Membership" and then select the "End membership" button.

Benefits of Amazon Prime

Amazon Prime is a comprehensive subscription with a wide range of benefits. Not everything is suited to everyone, but there's a lot of value included, particularly if you live in capital cities.

Here's a breakdown of what you can enjoy as a Prime member:

Fast shipping

Amazon offers free one-day delivery to Prime customers in certain areas. You need to live in a select postcode area in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Wollongong, Newcastle, Geelong or Gosford to be eligible for one-day shipping, though if you're outside the area you'll still get items shipped quickly.

To see if you are eligible for one-day shipping, look for your postcode on Amazon's list of eligible postcodes page.

Not every item is eligible for one-day shipping though. You need to look for the special Prime One-Day shipping logo when you're buying products.

I can say this is pretty special. I bought my son a gaming mouse at 9:15pm on a Friday night, and it was delivered by 10am on Saturday morning.

Amazon also offers free International shipping for items purchased through its global store, with no minimum spend.

Prime Video

Included in the $9.99 a month cost for Prime, Prime Video is one of the best value video streaming services available.

From July 2, the basic plan will include ads, which you can get rid of by paying an extra $2.99 per month.

Amazon has a wide range of incredible original shows and movies to stream on the platform. That includes Rings of Power, The Boys, Fallout and Wheel of Time.

You can buy or rent movies from the store for newer releases, and Amazon also lets you manage additional streaming "channels" through the platform, like Britbox, Paramount+ and Hayu.

Prime Gaming

The value included in Prime Gaming is enough to pay for your subscription over a year a few times over.

Every month, Amazon Gaming gives downloadable codes for games on platforms like Epic Games and GOG. These games are yours to keep, even after your Prime subscription ends.

If you spend more time gaming on consoles than PC, then there's not really free games, though you will be able to enjoy exclusive add-ons for games like Fortnight, Rocket League and FC24.

Amazon Music Prime

Amazon offers a free Music streaming service as part of its Prime subscription. You get ad-free streaming of millions of songs and podcasts, all as part of your subscription.

As well as a la carte streaming of your favourite songs, albums and podcasts, you can browse through curated playlists, or simply pop on your "My Soundtrack" radio soundtrack, which plays songs based on your musical tastes.

It's important to note that the Prime version of Amazon Music isn't as comprehensive as Amazon Music Unlimited, which offers 100 million songs. Amazon does offer an extensive free trial of the Unlimited product though if you want to try it.

Exclusive shopping deals

There are always products on sale at Amazon. But there are even bigger savings to be had if you are a Prime Customer.

Amazon has its annual Prime Day sale, which offers massive discounts on a wide range of products.

But it also has a few other Prime sale events, like the Big Smile sale or Prime Big Deal Days.

But even outside of the big sale events, Prime customers can enjoy exclusive deals, including up to 15% off auto-deliveries of regularly used items.

Prime Reading

Amazon started out as a digital bookstore, and it's still a part of the company's DNA.

While it offers Kindle Unlimited, a dedicated subscription service for eBooks you can read on a Kindle Scribe or other Kindle ereader, Prime customers get to enjoy its Prime Reading subscription as part of their membership.

With thousands of ebooks and digital comics to choose from, there's a huge range of reading material available for Kindle owners.
