I only managed to get a few minutes of hands on time with the ROG Ally last year at ASUS' laptop launch event. But that was enough to show that ASUS had a cracking idea to deliver a full blown gaming PC in a Switch-like body.
While my hands on time was short, lots of other review sites got more time with the device, enough to see that there were sacrifices made to deliver the first gen product. Battery life was a bit weak, internal storage got used up quickly and it was a bit awkward to hold.
So it's great news that ASUS has seemed to address all of those issues with the new ROG Ally X.
The new model has doubled the internal storage to 1TB, with a redesigned motherboard that lets users upgrade their storage themselves.
There's 24GB RAM on board, which is shared between the GPU and CPU, and offers better performance for AAA titles.
Plus, the battery life has been doubled to 80 Wh. While a huge number of factors wiull impact battery drain, doubling the battery's capacity while only adding 70 grams is a testament to the engineering.
Pricing and availability
The best part of the whole announcement is that the ASUS ROG Ally X will hit Aussie shelves on July 22 2024. It will have an RRP of $1,599, and be available from ASUS directly and JB Hi-Fi.
