For many games competition is king, and to be the best, you need to ensure you have the best equipment.

While having a powerful gaming computer or console, the best controller, or the best mouse and best gaming keyboard are obvious requirements, ensuring you have the best possible audio is crucial as well.

Gaming headsets not only provide sound, but in many cases they also allow you to connect to your teammates to coordinate and work better as a team. And so it’s imperative you have a gaming headset that offers a high-quality microphone as well.

There are hundreds of gaming headphones on the market today, so choosing the right model for you can be a challenge.

To help make the decision easier, we’ve analysed the picks from the most highly ranked sites on Google. We rated the products against each other, reflecting on how highly they were featured and how many times they appeared across different sites.

These are the best gaming headsets you can buy in Australia today:

SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro Wireless

SteelSeries cut its teeth making high-quality gaming peripherals, but with the Arctis Nova Pro Wireless, it has managed to create a great pair of headphones not just for gamers, but for everyone.

The Arctis Nova Pro wireless is incredibly well built, and has fantastic sound quality with a retractable mic in the left ear cup. A replaceable battery means you can reconnect quickly should you run out of juice unexpectedly.

It’s definitely on the pricier side for a gaming headset, but for that price you get an extremely versatile pair of headphones.

SteelSeries Arctis Nova Pro

If you don’t want to spend the money on the Arctis Nova Pro Wireless from SteelSeries, you can save some change by keeping the cord connected and opting for the wired version.

Offering the same design and build quality as the wireless version, the Arctis Nova Pro also includes the bundled GameDAC, with pre-loaded EQ settings so you can get the perfect quality audio for your tastes.

For just two-thirds of the price of the wireless model, there is plenty to make this a worthy addition to your gaming repertoire.

Razer BlackShark V2

This wired gaming headset is a versatile pair of headphones for a reasonable price.

Compatible with the major gaming platforms and with a removable boom mic, the BlackShark V2 comes with a USB sound card that adds custom modes for gaming and virtual surround sound functionality.

It’s worth noting that the USB sound card won’t work with Xbox platforms.

HyperX Cloud Alpha Wireless

The wireless variant of the HyperX Cloud Alpha gaming headset brings a new layer of versatility, cutting the cord without cutting performance.

Battery life is impressive, with claims of up to 300 hours of playback, which is a huge amount for a wireless gaming headset.

Audio quality is great, particularly for the price. It’s not the best sound you’ll find, but you also won’t feel you’re missing anything.

Razer Barracuda X

Versatile and lightweight, the Razer Barracuda X is designed to work across your PC, console or mobile device effortlessly.

It can quickly toggle between 2.4GHz wireless for gaming, and traditional Bluetooth for music streaming or calls on your phone.

The detachable microphone lets you comfortably wear these headphones on a commute as naturally as a gaming session, and the 50-hour battery life is impressive.

Razer BlackShark V2 Pro (2023)

Designed for professional gamers but available for every skill level, the Razer BlackShark V2 Pro definitely sits on the pricey end of the product scale.

But it delivers quality to match that price. You get exceptional audio and a fantastic microphone, making this ideal for multiplayer experiences.

It does only come in wireless flavours though, so if you prefer to have your headset corded this won’t work for you.

But the wireless performance is fantastic, with no lag over the 2.4GHz connection. Plus if you’re desperate, you can use Bluetooth as well.

Corsair Virtuoso RGB Wireless XT

Corsair offers a remarkable amount of quality in this premium gaming headset.

Connectivity is key, with the option to connect via 3.5mm cable or USB-C for wired options, or 2.5GHz or Bluetooth for wireless.

You get dual connectivity too, so you can take phone calls over Bluetooth while playing games on your PS5 through the 2.5GHz dongle.

Audio quality is incredible, and the headset itself is both comfortable and robust enough to carry around in a bag.

Turtle Beach Stealth Pro

With “Pro” in the product’s name, you just know that the Turtle Beach Stealth Pro isn’t going to be a cheap and cheerful gaming headset. But it does offer exceptional performance.

The design is wireless only, with no wired backup options. That means you are entirely relying on your battery to stay charged long enough for your gaming session, and fortunately battery life is great.

The headset even comes with a second hot-swappable battery in case you need to change quickly.

You also get dual-mode wireless, with both Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz wireless.

While it comes in both Xbox and Playstation variants, the only real difference is the colour of the light on the transmitter. The headset will work with any device effortlessly.

Logitech G Pro X

Logitech’s G Pro X gaming headset offers good sound and a comfortable fit, but it’s the software that really helps it stand apart.

Logitech Blue Vo!ce offers software presets and adjustable settings, so everything is crystal clear when you’re gaming online.

It’s easy enough for beginners, with more advanced settings available for pros as well.

There’s also a wireless version if you prefer your gaming to be cable free.

How we chose the best gaming headphones

Review sites – including this one – are subjective by nature. Everybody has a different opinion of what is best.

So to try and counter the fact that every best guide on the internet has a different opinion of what is best, we approached our list by combining the results of some of the top sites recommending gaming headphones on the market today.

To determine this list, we followed the same journey most consumers would follow: we went to Google. This is the same approach we used to determine our list of the best headphones in Australia.

We searched for “Best gaming headphones” and identified 10 of the top results.

We then listed out all of the gaming headphones listed on each site, tidying up any slight differences in spelling for consistency.

We then calculated how often each product was mentioned across those 10 guides. The more frequently a product is mentioned, the more agreement there is between experts reviewing these products. We set a minimum of three mentions across all 10 guides to be eligible for inclusion here.

Before we created this page, we went through the list to make it relevant for our local audience. We removed products that are either unavailable, or difficult to find in Australia.

We also leveraged our own experience with products to ensure that we wouldn’t be recommending any product that doesn’t deliver.

What to look for when choosing the best gaming headphones

Whether you’re after one of the models listed above or something completely different, the decision factors you need to consider when buying gaming headsets are the same.

Comfort

Sometimes you’re going to be playing for hours. And for those sessions, you’re going to want a pair of headphones that are comfortable. You don’t want them to start squeezing your head. Your ears shouldn’t feel crushed. You don’t want them to get too hot and sweaty. Comfort is imperative.

Wired or wireless

In many cases this will depend on the type of gaming you’re doing. Typically, you’ll get better performance from a wired set of headphones, as there’s less latency between when something is said and when you hear it. Modern wireless headsets can be pretty good though, and have the obvious benefit of not getting tangled among controllers and keyboards.

Sound quality

Not only do you want your game to sound crystal clear, with booming bass and perfectly crisp high notes. You also want to know where the sound is coming from. Surround sound features are common in gaming headsets and can make all the difference to your game. But you don’t want that to come at the expense of being able to identify every note.

Features and functions

This depends entirely on your wants and desires. Do you want noise cancellation? A sweat proof design? Do you want customisable audio through an app? Think about what you want before you make your choice.

In some cases, you may be happy to just use a good pair of noise cancelling headphones. However, if you are playing competitively, a proper gaming headset is the way to go.

Price

This is one of the most important factors there is. Product quality obviously increases the cost. Quite often though the right choice for you is not the most expensive model on the market. Consider your budget before buying.
