The Nintendo Switch 2 is an iterative upgrade, and I am definitely okay with that
With one two-minute trailer, Nintendo has me excited to play Switch again, and I'm not 100% sure why.
Last month, I excitedly opened my Nintendo year in review, curious to see how I had balanced the year between my PlayStation and my Switch.
The result shocked me. Out of 366 days in 2024, I spent a grand total of 39 hours playing two Switch games. In 2023, I had played double that, across eight different games.
With the announcement of the Switch 2 in the early hours of this morning, it has made me wonder why that is.
It's certainly not for a lack of games – I still haven't played through Tears of the Kingdom, and I really want to replay Breath of the Wild before I do that.
But I think the types of games I've enjoyed over the past year – the epic storylines of the Star Wars Universe in Jedi: Survivor and Star Wars: Outlaws – lend themselves more to the more powerful PS5 console.
Even when I'm playing something more social like FIFA, I prefer the extra fidelity and larger controllers of the PlayStation. It's only when we want to play something exclusive to the Switch, (which is inevitably Mario Kart 8) that we turn on the Nintendo console.
So my hopes for the Switch 2 lie in two areas. The first is a big step up in graphical fidelity. I want 4K, at least when docked. And I want bigger, more comfortable controllers.
The second is a wider range of epic games. With confirmation that the Switch 2 will be backwards compatible, I have high hopes that some of the big games that launched on the Switch but underperformed (like L.A. Noire) will get an enormous boost in performance.
From the first look today, I'm guessing my wishes will come true. And that makes me excited for the Switch 2's arrival whenever that may be.
