Valve originally launched the Steam Deck in North America back in December of 2021, but it never saw an official Australian release. Sure, you could import it through retailers like Kogan or Amazon, but it wasn't an official Aussie launch.

That has officially changed. Valve has confirmed that the Steam Deck is launching in Australia in November, with pricing starting at just $649.

In an interview with Shannon Grixti at Press Start, Steam Deck Designer Lawrence Yang explained that the delay in launching in Australia was due to entirely boring logistical reasons.

“Australia was always on our list and had to make sure from a certification standpoint and the answer is really boring. It just took until now to get everything lined up, so we needed to have logistics and shipping and a third-party logistics partner and all of that lined up before we could ship officially here. and now we can. If it could have been sooner, it would have been sooner” said Yang.

The Steam Deck is launching in three different configurations in Australia. The cheapest is just $649, with 256GB of storage and an LCD screen, while the top of the line $1049 model has an OLED display and 1TB of storage.

The market has shifted dramatically since the Steam Deck first launched, with products like the ASUS ROG Ally, and the MSI Claw launching to cater to PC gamers wanting a portable gaming fix.

But with its direct integration with Steam, these are going to sell like wildfire. I know what's on my Christmas wishlist this year...
