Dyson gets its headphone ambitions on track with the Dyson OnTrac
Dyson has announced its latest product, the Dyson OnTrac noise cancelling headphones. Here's everything you need to know.
Dyson’s first premium headphone product was… odd. There was a lot to like about the Dyson Zone, but the inclusion of the air purifier mask that made you look like a Batman villain wasn’t really that enticing.
Dyson’s second headphone product does away with the air purifier, and instead focuses on the audio. The Dyson OnTrac are over-ear headphones with a huge audio range, long battery life and noise cancellation, with a customisable design that will let you create a truly unique pair of headphones to match your style.
Dyson’s announcement for the OnTrac leads with its noise cancellation capabilities. Using eight integrated microphones, the OnTrac samples external sounds 384,000 times a second and uses its custom noise cancellation algorithm to cancel up to 40dB of unwanted noise.
This is backed up with 40mm, 16-ohm neodymium speaker drivers. Combined with Dyson’s custom design, the OnTrac can deliver a massive audio range of 6Hz – 21,000 Hz, which is significantly beyond what many high-end headphones offer on the spec sheet (and beyond most people’s hearing as well).
The OnTrac delivers up to 55 hours of battery life with ANC switched on, powered by a pair of lithium-ion batteries that are housed in the headband rather than the ear covers, helping better distribute the OnTrac’s weight.
Custom design
The OnTrac are made from materials designed to deliver both comfort and acoustic reproduction. Foam cushions and multi-pivot gymbal arms help relieve ear pressure, while micro-suede ear cushions and an optimised design help the headphones feel secure without hurting on all head sizes.
But the other trick Dyson has up its sleeve with the OnTrac is the customisable finishes. The headphones themselves come in four colourways, but Dyson will sell seven additional ear cushions and seven custom outer caps, giving you the freedom to create your own style.
There are a bunch of other cool (though somewhat expected) features, like head detect sensors to automatically pause playback when you remove them, and an intuitive control joystick.
Pricing and availability
The Dyson OnTrac will be available to purchase in Australia from 28 August in four colourways:
- CNC Aluminium
- CNC Copper
- Ceramic Cinnabar
- CNC Black Nickel
The headphones will have an RRP of $799.
