Look, I'm not one to pre-order a robot vacuum cleaner, but I do have to say that I am extremely interested to check out the new Ecovacs Deebot X2 Omni.

Announced last week at the IFA conference in Berlin, the new flagship robot vacuum from Ecovacs is set to arrive in store shelves on September 21.

If you're a robot vacuum geek – and let's face it, you are if you're reading this article – then there are plenty of innovations to get excited about.

The most obvious is the new design. While almost every previous Ecovacs model has been circular in design, the X2 Omni is more of a square with rounded edges. And it has no top protrusion, measuring just 9.5 cm off the ground.

That means that it's going to get under more furniture for a better clean.

It's going to suck

8,000 Pa of suction sounds like a lot of suction. It's 60% more than the X1 Omni. It's not going to be sucking at that intensity the whole time, though.

It's going to use what Ecovacs is describing as a "semi-solid-state LIDAR" to navigate around your home, which is integrated into the body of the vacuum. That's why you won't have the traditional Ecovacs protruding head.

The mopping side is also getting an enormous improvement. Like the recently released T20 vacuum, the X2 Omni features auto-lift mopping pads, so you can let the robot vacuum and mop at the same time, managing both carpets and hard floors in a single clean.

The base station is a powerhouse, offering a compact body to collect the dust and dirt the vacuum picks up on its journeys through your home.

It also washes those mop pads at a hot 55-degrees, then dries them so you don't get any musty odours through your home.

Pricing and availability

There are over 100 patents Ecovacs has pulled together to make the Deebot X2 Omni, so it's no surprise that this is priced at the premium end of the robot vacuum scale.

It has an RRP of $2,499, and is available for pre-order now from Amazon, the Ecovacs store online, Bing Lee, Harvey Norman, JB Hi-Fi the Good Guys and Robot Specialist.

If you aren't too excited to pre-order, you'll be able to pick one up from September 21.
