The Aussie-designed espresso 15 Touch is one of my favourite products at the moment, so much so that it received a Hall of Fame Award. But today espresso announced its bigger, better sibling the 17 Pro, which delivers 4K resolution, 450 nits of brightness and 1 billion colours.

The espresso 17 Pro measures in at 397.6 x 245.6 x 9 mm and weighs 1.1kg. It's noticeably bigger and heavier than the 15 Touch, but it's still remarkably sleek and still exceptionally portable for a 17-inch display.

Espresso reworked the internal designs to it's a little wider than the smaller screen but not quite as tall, ditching the double chin design of the 15 Touch.

Like the smaller model, the 17 Pro is powered by a single USB-C cable, drawing power from the device you're plugged into. Intelligent software means it will automatically adjust settings to optimise performance based on the hardware it's connected to.

This is especially important as it will draw more power than a smaller screen when connected to your laptop.

Touchscreen improvements

The espresso 17 laying down

Espresso has done a lot of work improving its touchscreen experience. The 17 Pro will work with the espresso Pen, supporting 4096 points of pressure.

But to really improve things, espresso has launched a new application called Jot, which creates a seamless experience for taking notes or drawing on the touchscreen device.

Using the buttons on the espresso Pen, you can easily launch Jot to create a blank canvas, take screenshots and mark them up, or insert a sketch into any document or presentation effortlessly.

Power on the go

The Espresso Charge

One of the challenges I faced with the 15 Touch in the review was that some devices, like the Nintendo Switch, didn't output enough power via USB-C to power the display.

The 17 Pro has a novel solution to this, with espresso launching a portable battery solution called the espresso Charge, which seamlessly attaches magnetically to the bottom of the 17 Pro's Stand.

The battery offers 27,000 mAh of power, making it easy to stay powered and connected no matter where you are.

When connected to a device using the espressoFlow software, the battery intelligently charges your laptop through the 17 Pro display when both are connected and the battery is running from power. Or when you plug your laptop into the mains, the espresso Charge will begin charging.
