Bring on the smart outfits: The HMD Fusion is in store today

You have to wait until December to change the phone's outfits, though.

Announced in early September at IFA 2024, the HMD Fusion has hit Australian retailers today.

A quick spec summary for you: Priced at $499, the modular phone is powered by a Snapdragon 4 Gen 2 processor and has a relatively low-res HD+ (720 x 1612) resolution.

You get 8GB RAM and 256GB storage, plus two years of Android OS updates. The phone also boasts a 108MP rear camera and a 50MP selfie cam.

It comes with HMD's "Digital detox mode" which lets you switch off notifications, and HMD's commitment to repairability means that just like the HMD Skyline, you can fix the screen yourself should you crack it accidentally.

But the biggest feature is the ability to change the "outfit", or case, of the phone to attach smart accessories using a six-pin connector. There are some "casual" outfits, that seem more like a traditional case swap, but the smart outfits are what is unique.

For example, there's an outfit that adds a gaming controller, an outfit that adds a ring light for better selfie video, and a rugged outfit that also adds wireless charging.

Surprisingly, these smart outfits won't be available until early December. It's a bit disappointing, but I guess logistically it could be challenging to get everything to line up.
