HMD OffGrid is a compact satellite communications device to help you stay connected everywhere

We've already seen the likes of Apple and Google start to offer emergency satellite connectivity in their premium smartphones, but HMD is making it easy for anyone to stay connected with the OffGrid.

This compact, lightweight device measures in at about 90 x 60 x 12 mm, and weighs just 60 grams. It acts as a gateway device, using L Band satellite radio spectrum to allow any iOS or Android phone to send and receive an SMS using your own phone number.

It can also contact emergency services directly from the app, giving your last known location.

If you don't need to send a personalised message, there's a button to send a check-in message to let someone know you're safe.

You can also set up location tracking in the app and share it with up to five people, with the option to share your location at intervals ranging from every three minutes to every four hours.

There's a 600mAh battery inside, which may seem small compared to a smartphone, but offers three days of battery life for the OffGrid's needs.

Pricing and availability

The HMD OffGrid is set to launch on Amazon from next month. To use the satellite service, you will need a subscription, with one of two plans on offer:

• HMD Unlimited Plan: A$24.99 a month or A$239.99 annually for unlimited messages and check-in, SOS services (one-time activation fee of A$13.99). Optional live tracking for A$6.99 a month.
• HMD Freedom Plan: A$112.99 a year (one-time payment) with 350 text messages, unlimited check-ins and live tracking (one-time activation fee of A$27.99).
