While Zuck announced the Meta Quest 3 VR headset back in June, today we have received confirmation that the headset will be available in Australia from October 10.

Pricing starts at $799.99 for the 128GB model, or $1,049.99 for the 512GB model.

Pre-orders are open for both models now, and if you order before January you'll receive a copy of the upcoming title Asgard’s Wrath 2 for free.

Those that order the 512GB version will also get a six-month subscription to Meta Quest +, Meta's game subscription service.

A closer look at the Meta Quest 3

From a hardware perspective, there's a lot of significant improvements over the current best VR headset in Australia, the Meta Quest 2.

It's the first VR headset to sport the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor, so you get better graphics, faster loading times and more seamless gameplay.

It boasts integrated stereo speakers that can create 3D spatial audio for immersive experiences, with a 40% louder audio range than the Quest 2.

2064 x 2208 pixels per eye boosts resolution by nearly 30% compared to Meta Quest 2, with a 110 degrees horizontal and 96 degrees vertical field of view.

Meta has also added two RGB cameras to help create an immersive mixed reality experience, with 10x the resolution of Quest 2 and 2x the resolution of Quest Pro in pass-through.

At 515 grams, it's still not exactly lightweight. But Meta has shaved 40% off the bulk by using pancake lenses, so it should be more comfortable than the Quest 2.

Controllers

Meta has redesigned the controllers, doing away with the ring design. Meta claims this helps the controllers become an extension of your hands.

They also come with TruTouch variable haptics, which provide tactile feedback.

On top of the controllers, the integrated RGB cameras and IR cameras can also track your hands, so you can control the Quest 3 without controllers as well.

Battery life

These are the numbers Meta is claiming for battery life on the Meta Quest 3:

  • Up to 2.2 hours of usage on average
  • Gaming: 2.4 hours of usage on average
  • Social: 2.2 hours of usage on average
  • Productivity: 1.5 hours minutes of usage on average
  • Media: 2.9 hours of usage on average
