Gaming behemoth Nintendo has announced its latest product. It's not a new console, or even a new game. Instead, it's an alarm clock.

That's right, an alarm clock. That category of bedside time-telling that was effectively made obsolete by the rise of the smartphone.

It's not even a cheap alarm clock. The new Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo (what a name!), will set you back $159.95 AUD if you're lucky enough to get into the ballot to buy one.

As you might imagine, the clock uses Nintendo characters and sounds on the Alarmo's screen to help wake you up. The clock features motion detection, so you can snooze the alarm with a wave of your hand, and get updates on how much you move around in your sleep.

There are 35 different gaming scenes to choose from to wake you up, with characters from five different Nintendo games like Super Mario Odyssey, Breath of the Wild, Splatoon 3, Pikmin 4 and... Ring Fit Adventure. There will also be updates introducing scenes from Mario Kart and Animal Crossing.

The whole concept is crazy. Not bad crazy, though. More like Nintendo crazy. The Nintendo crazy that decided to call a gaming console the "Wii", and have it become one of the biggest selling consoles of all time.

How to buy the Nintendo Sound Clock: Alarmo

This thing is going to sell out in no time, which is ridiculous in itself. But Nintendo is prepared for it, making it a bit of a process to get your hands on one.

If you are a Nintendo Switch Online member, you can register your interest on Nintendo's store and go in the ballot to get early access to the Alarmo. There will be two ballot drawings for the clock by the end of October, and you can receive the product by 13 November.

If you can't be bothered with that - or you aren't a Nintendo Switch Online customer – then the Alarmo will hit shelves in March next year for $159.95.
