The cheap phone competition is pretty hot at the moment, and OPPO has just thrown some petrol on the fire with its latest smartphone, the OPPO A18.

It's a $219 device that offers a huge 5,000 mAh battery, an impressive 6.56-inch display with a 90Hz refresh rate and powered by the MediaTek Helio G85 processor.

IP54 rated against dust and water (which means it can handle the odd splash, but don't take it swimming), the phone is robustly designed in a compact body, 8.16mm in thickness and weighing about 188 grams.

The screen is also designed to reach a peak 720 nits in brightness, which makes it easy to see and read even in full, direct sunlight.

You get 4GB RAM and 128GB ROM on board, though the phone support's OPPO's RAM extension technology that will convert some unused ROM space into up to 4GB RAM to keep the phone running smoothly.

On the camera front, the A18 boasts an 8MP main camera and a 2MP bokeh camera. While that won't compete with the likes of the iPhone 15 Pro, it's definitely good enough to take some nice portrait photos, particularly in good lighting.

On the battery front, you won't get the SUPERVOOC fast charging you see in other devices like the A98 5G, but the 5,000mAh battery should still get you through the day.

Not only that, but OPPO has still loaded this with battery smarts, so it will intelligently charge the device to ensure the battery lasts for longer.

Pricing and availability

The OPPO A18 is available from today in two colours: Glowing Blue and Glowing Black. It has an RRP of $219 and is available from retailers including the OPPO Online Store, JB Hi-Fi, Big W, Harvey Norman (online only), Bing Lee (online only).

We'll keep an eye out to see if this becomes one of OPPO's best-rated phones.
