Ring has updated its battery video doorbell

Taller video, colour night vision and 23% extra battery life over previous models.

Ring releases a lot of video doorbells. It's kind of its thing, right? But it also gets confusing. Like the Video Doorbell 4 I reviewed last year is no longer available, but it was an update on the Video Doorbell 3 which was an update of the Video Doorbell 2.

And Ring's latest product is also update to the old Video Doorbell 2nd Gen.

So what's going on? I have no idea. So let's just look at the new camera and see what it does.

The biggest change is the addition of head-to-toe video, which includes displays a 150-degree by 150-degree field of view in HD resolution. That should be enough to see if you've got any packages at the front door, and is a 66 per cent taller view over the Battery Doorbell 2nd gen.

Ring has added colour night vision mode to the new model, which does exactly what it says on the tin. Ring also promises better battery life, quoting as much as 23% in its press release.

These features aren't exactly revolutionary, having appeared in more premium Ring doorbells in the past, but it's good to see these useful functions come to a more entry level device.

You still need a Ring Protect subscription to get features like Package Alerts and cloud storage. If you have more than one Ring camera, you need a more expensive subscription as well.

One of the other key changes in this new model is a simpler DIY installation. Rather than having to unscrew the security screw every time you want to recharge the battery, you insert the supplied push-pin tool and the whole doorbell will pop off.
