Last night Samsung took the lid off its complete 2024 lineup of TVs, and the headline is that the company is making AI the centrepiece of the experience.

There's a reasonable justification for AI's use as well. Where previous generations of TVs have tried to upscale images by stretching them out, creating pixels to make the picture look appropriate on higher resolutions screens, AI actually generates the images in real time, to create pixels to fill in the gaps.

And because it's based on large data samples, the idea is that the picture you get from an AI upscaled images is much crisper and detailed than something that hasn't been.

There are AI smarts for audio in the new lineup as well, focused on analysing background noise in real time in order to properly amplify speech so it's easy to hear, no matter what's happening in the background.

8K all the way

Samsung is leaning heavily on its 8K Neo QLED panels this year. With the big screen sizes, plus the NQ8 AI Gen3 processor, these TVs are designed to take lower quality picture quality and upscale it to 8K using generative AI.

Samsung says that the NQ8 AI Gen3 processor features a Neural Processing Unit that is twice as fast as the previous version.

It's not just about upscaling though. There is also AI driven motion enhancement to remove judder from fast moving sports scenes.

Samsung said the AI model could detect the shape of the ball on screen and optimise for the sport in question.

The Neo QLED 8K panels also use AI to add depth to pictures to create a more immersive experience. Undoubtedly, we'll see some of these pop up in this year's best TVs lists.

4K panels for the masses

While 8K TVs are much more versatile this year thanks to that AI upscaling function, 4K is still much more accessible and good enough for most Australian households.

Samsung's 4K panels use the NQ4 AI Gen2 processor, Samsung's 4K Tvs deliver Pantone validated colour reproduction and Dolby Atmos audio support.

You also get the same AI-driven depth enhancement on the 4K TVs.
