Last year I got to spend a bit of time using the Samsung Bespoke washing and drying machines, and they were pretty good. I only managed a couple of loads, but the AI functionality seemed to help make washing a bit easier.

But now Samsung has blended them together into a single unit called the Bespoke AI Heat Pump Combo, and I think it makes a lot more sense.

I've always been a bit reluctant to use combo units because I'm scared of what it will do to my clothes. But by integrating some AI smarts, plus using the more gentle heat pump technology, I think Samsung might be onto a winner here.

Samsung is selling this product on a few different points. Number one is speed.

Apparently, the Bespoke AI Heat Pump Combo can pump through a wash and dry in just 98 minutes on the Super Speed Cycle. That number is based on a 3kg load being washed in 28 minutes and then dried in 70 minutes.

The drying takes significantly longer because it's using the heat pump technology to dry your clothes at a lower temperature.

The second selling point is ease of use. The Bespoke AI Heat Pump Combo has a mode called "AI Opti Wash & Dry", which uses a bunch of on-board sensors to optimise the washing and drying of your load.

That includes things like the weight, the level of dirt detected during the cycle and the type of fabric.

The third big selling point is the energy efficiency. Not only is the appliance rated at 10 stars for its dryer energy efficiency, but by leveraging the AI Opti Wash and Dry mode, Samsung claims the Bespoke AI Heat Pump Combo uses 60% less energy during a washing cycle and 20% during the drying cycle.

You can also track your estimated energy use in real-time via the SmartThings app, just like in the AX46 air purifier I reviewed last year.

Pricing and availability

The Bespoke AI Heat Pump Combo is available to pre-order from Samsung's website now, and will be available from 12 September. It has an RRP starting at $5,499.
