At Galaxy Unpacked, Samsung officially announced its latest foldable phones: The Galaxy Fold6 and Galaxy Z Flip6. WIth minor changes to the design, the biggest selling point for this year’s model over last year appears to be the inclusion of more AI features.

Samsung has bumped up some AI functions to take advantage of the dual screen real-estate offered by the phones.

Like previous generations, the Z Fold6 is the workhorse of the pair, with the Z Flip6 designed for the more creative and stylish phone buyers.

That said, both phones are powered by the SnapDragon 8 Gen 3 platform optimised for Galaxy, which is the same chipset in the impressive Galaxy S24 Ultra.

The Galaxy Z Fold6 and Flip6 both also comes with seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6: A workhorse

The Z Fold6 has had a bit of a reshaping over last year’s Fold5. While the Fold5 had a 6.2-inch external screen with a 23.1:9 aspect ratio, this year’s model boasts a larger 6.3-inch external screen with a 22.1:9 aspect ratio.

On the inside, the Fold5’s 7.6-inch 1812 × 2176 AMOLED 2X display is now a 2160 × 1856 AMOLED 2X display on the Fold6.

That slight reshaping means that the Fold6 is now just 12.1 mm thick when folded, and 5.6 mm thick when open. While the ratio was one of my challenges with last year’s model, I don’t think the change has done quite enough to make this model more usable.

To help with performance, Samsung has increased the size of the vapour cooling chamber in the Fold6 and equipped the phone with an Arbor Aluminium frame and Corning Gorilla Glass Victus 2 for its front and internal displays.

Cameras remain the same, with Samsung relying on the AI updates to differentiate its camera performance.

Samsung Galaxy Z Flip6: For style

While the Flip6 is powered by the same processor as the Fold, its intent is very different. The flip style is designed to better display the various AI functions.

The external “FlexWindow” screen is the same as last year’s Flip5, but with more widget options to show off on the external display.

This includes having contextually intelligent message responses – where Galaxy AI will analyse your past seven messages to a person to come up with a response you can quickly send without opening the phone.

The big update this year is the camera array, which gets boosted to a new 50MP wide and a 12MP Ultra-wide sensor. You get 2x optical zoom and up to 10x digital zoom.

When taking a selfie with the “FlexWindow”, the AI will automatically zoom in or out depending on the scene in front of you, going wider for landscape shots, or zooming in for profile images.

Samsung has also introduced a vapour chamber to the Flip6, helping keep the phone’s temperature down when it’s doing many complex AI tasks.

AI at the forefront

I’ve been pretty vocal about how little I think of generative AI, but there are some cool features on offer here.

First up is the translation function, which lets you use both screens on either phone to write out your statements in a different language so you can converse in different languages in near real-time.

And as someone who needs to record interviews or conversations, AI-powered transcription through the notes app is a game-changer.

But functions like composing messages or emails, or sketching something and tuning it into an image, seems like something that you’ll use once to try and then forget about.

Similarly, creating digital avatars or portraits in cartoon or animated character styles seems like a pretty weak selling point for a premium phone.

But then again, my daughter would probably love it.
